Lines, creases and hollows: which injectable or booster category matches the cause?

Lines caused by repeated muscle movement, lines etched into the skin at rest and hollows from lost volume each point toward a different category, typically toxin, filler or a skin booster. Because injectables involve anatomy, blood vessels and individual proportions, a doctor's in-person assessment of the face is what decides whether and how any of them is used.

Three different reasons a line appears

Dynamic lines show up when you frown, squint or raise your eyebrows and fade when the face relaxes. Static lines remain visible at rest because the skin has creased over time. Volume loss is different again: fat pads shrink and shift, bone contours change, and shadows form in areas such as the under-eye, temples and cheeks. Many faces show a mix of all three, which is why one product rarely addresses everything seen in the mirror.

  • Dynamic: forehead lines, frown lines, crow's feet that appear with expression
  • Static: creases that stay visible when the face is still
  • Volume-related: hollows, flattened cheeks and deeper folds linked to tissue loss
  • Surface quality: fine crepey lines and dullness linked to dryness and thinning skin

Toxin, filler and skin boosters compared

Botulinum toxin is injected into specific muscles to reduce their movement, softening dynamic lines. Its effect is temporary and wears off as nerve signaling recovers. Hyaluronic acid filler is a gel placed beneath the skin to restore volume or support a fold, and it is also temporary, with longevity depending on the product and area.

Skin boosters aim at skin quality rather than shape. Polynucleotide (PN) products, of which Rejuran is a widely recognized example, are injected in small amounts across an area to support hydration and repair. Hyaluronic acid boosters work on moisture and fine texture. Boosters do not lift or fill folds in the way filler does, so they are usually discussed for crepey or tired-looking skin instead.

The product is not the procedure

With injectables, the line between product and procedure is especially important. The same toxin can look natural or heavy depending on dose, placement and the doctor's reading of how each muscle works. The same filler can blend in or look overdone depending on depth, volume, the use of a needle or blunt cannula and knowledge of where blood vessels run. Asking a doctor how they plan placement for your facial structure, and how they handle complications, is often more informative than asking which brand they use.

Who may not suit injectables

Medical history matters a great deal here, so a full list of medications and supplements is worth bringing to any consultation.

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding, when toxin and filler are usually avoided
  • Certain neuromuscular conditions, which may make toxin unsuitable
  • Blood thinners or supplements that raise bruising risk, which should be discussed rather than stopped without medical advice
  • Active infection, acne flare or cold sores at the injection site
  • Known allergies to product components or previous reactions to filler
  • A history of keloids or unusual healing, mainly relevant to repeated needle work

Risks and what the days afterward may look like

Bruising, swelling and small injection bumps are common with all injectables and usually settle. Toxin can occasionally cause a heavy brow, drooping eyelid or uneven expression if it spreads to nearby muscles. Filler carries a rare but serious risk of vascular occlusion, where product blocks a blood vessel; this can lead to skin damage and, in very rare cases around certain areas, effects on vision. It is a key reason the injector's anatomical knowledge and readiness to treat complications matter. Lumps, migration and delayed inflammatory reactions are also possible. Boosters often leave small raised bumps and redness that fade over a short period, which some people find more visible than expected.

Frequently asked questions

Does toxin fill in wrinkles?

No. Toxin relaxes the muscle behind a dynamic line so it forms less strongly. Static creases and hollows may need a different category.

Are skin boosters a type of filler?

They are injected, but their purpose is skin quality rather than volume. They generally do not lift or fill folds the way hyaluronic acid filler is designed to.

Can filler be reversed?

Hyaluronic acid filler can often be dissolved with an enzyme if needed, which is part of how complications are managed. Not every filler type can be dissolved, so it is worth asking what product is planned.
