Radiesse (Calcium Hydroxylapatite)

Radiesse is often described as a hybrid, which is a helpful way to understand where it sits. This page explains what that means for the concerns it addresses, how its behavior differs from hyaluronic acid and poly-L-lactic acid, and where it is not a good choice.

How it works

The product contains tiny calcium hydroxylapatite particles, a mineral similar to a component of bone, suspended in a gel carrier. When injected, the gel provides immediate support and lift. Over the following weeks the carrier is absorbed, and the particles act as a scaffold on which the body lays down new collagen. It is a thicker, more structural material than many hyaluronic acid fillers, and doctors may dilute it for broader use on skin quality in some areas. The effect lasts for a period that varies by person, area and dilution, and the particles are gradually broken down by the body.

Who it may suit

  • Jawline definition and chin support where structure is needed
  • Cheek support with a mix of immediate lift and gradual improvement
  • Mild to moderate skin laxity combined with volume loss
  • Hand rejuvenation in selected cases, as decided by the doctor

The treatment day

  1. Structural assessment. The doctor looks at bone support, fat pads and skin laxity to decide whether a thicker product suits the area.
  2. Numbing. Numbing cream is applied, and the product often contains lidocaine for comfort.
  3. Deep or diluted placement. The product is placed at the depth and strength chosen for the target, using a needle or cannula.
  4. Shaping and review. The doctor may mold the area gently and check symmetry before you leave.

Aftercare

  • Avoid pressure or massage on the area unless specifically told to massage
  • Apply cold compresses to settle swelling and avoid intense exercise for a day or two
  • Avoid saunas and alcohol for the first day or so
  • Report severe pain, blanching of skin, or any vision change immediately

Things to know first

  • Swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness are common and usually settle in days
  • Lumps or nodules can form, particularly if placed too superficially, and there is no enzyme to dissolve this product
  • Vascular occlusion is a rare but serious risk, as with any filler
  • It is not typically used in the lips or the thin skin under the eyes
  • Not recommended in pregnancy, breastfeeding, active infection, or with a history of severe allergic reactions to ingredients

How Radiesse compares with nearby options

Hyaluronic acid filler is softer, more adjustable, and can be dissolved if needed. Radiesse is firmer and more structural, which is helpful where bone support has thinned but makes it a poor match for delicate or mobile areas. Choosing between them is largely a question of the tissue: thin or mobile areas lean toward hyaluronic acid, while structural areas such as the jawline and chin are where a firmer product may be discussed.

Poly-L-lactic acid stimulators act more slowly and are placed over a broader area with a series of sessions. Radiesse delivers visible support at the first visit, followed by gradual change. That timing difference is often the deciding factor for people who want some effect right away.

For loose skin without volume loss, neither is the primary tool. Energy-based lifting devices or threads address laxity, and some people combine them with a structural filler for the underlying support.

Radiesse (Calcium Hydroxylapatite): common questions

Is it a filler or a collagen stimulator?

Both, in a sense. It gives immediate support from the gel and then encourages collagen as the carrier is absorbed.

Can it be dissolved?

There is no enzyme for it, unlike hyaluronic acid products. This is why placement depth and conservative amounts matter.

Is it suitable for the lips?

Generally no. It is firm and not designed for soft, mobile tissue.

How long do results last?

It varies by person, area and how the product is used. Many people see results for a year or longer, but this is not certain.
