Microwave Lifting (ONDA)

Microwave lifting is the option people reach for when two concerns overlap: slight skin looseness and a soft pocket of fat that does not respond to tightening alone. It is less well known than HIFU or RF, so knowing where it fits among them is the useful part.

How it works

The device delivers microwave energy at a frequency that is absorbed mostly by water and fat. Because fat holds less water than skin, the energy can heat the deeper fatty layer while contact cooling protects the surface. The heating is meant to reduce the volume of some fat cells and to stimulate collagen remodeling in surrounding tissue. Change develops over weeks to months, usually modestly, and results vary by person, area and how many sessions are done.

Who it may suit

  • Mild laxity combined with a small fat deposit under the chin or along the jawline
  • People who want a non-invasive approach with little or no downtime
  • Small areas such as the lower face and neck, or limited body zones
  • Those who do not want injections or needles

The treatment day

  1. Confirm the cause. The doctor tests whether the fullness is soft fat, loose skin, muscle or a mix, since microwave suits only some of these.
  2. Mark the zone. The treatment area is outlined and checked for implants, metal or recent procedures.
  3. Run the handpiece. The applicator is placed on the skin in sequence, with cooling built in, and moved over the marked zone.
  4. Plan the series. A short course is common, and the doctor suggests a spacing based on the first response.

Aftercare

  • Mild warmth, redness or puffiness may appear for a day or two.
  • Drink water and stay out of intense heat for a short time if the area feels tender.
  • Continue gentle skincare and wear daily sunscreen.
  • Report lumps, blisters, lasting numbness or asymmetry that does not settle.

Things to know first

  • Possible side effects include temporary swelling, redness, tenderness, bruising, and rarely surface burns or nodules.
  • Implanted devices, metal near the zone, pregnancy and active infection are common reasons to avoid microwave energy.
  • It is not a weight-loss method and may not change a large fat deposit or marked skin excess.
  • Outcomes are modest and differ by person; a second opinion on surgical options may be worthwhile for heavier cases.

How microwave lifting compares with nearby options

Think of the neighbors in terms of what they target. HIFU and RF mostly address skin firmness; microwave leans toward the fat layer while also warming the skin. If your lower face feels full as well as slightly loose, microwave may enter the conversation sooner than it would for someone with thin, crepey skin only.

A fat-dissolving injection is another way to reduce a small submental pocket, but it involves needles, more swelling and a different recovery. Microwave avoids injections yet works more gradually. For purely lax skin without fat, HIFU or radiofrequency are usually the more direct comparisons, and for volume loss a filler or stimulator may fit better.

It is a poor match for very large fat deposits, significant skin excess or a bony jaw structure that changes the profile; those cases may call for liposuction or surgery. A doctor can say which of these descriptions fits you.

Microwave Lifting (ONDA): common questions

How is microwave lifting different from HIFU or RF?

The energy is absorbed mainly by water and fat, so it heats the fatty layer more than the others do. HIFU and RF are discussed more for skin firmness.

Will it remove a double chin?

It may reduce a small soft deposit for some people, but it is not expected to remove a large one. A doctor can judge whether the fullness is fat, skin or muscle.

Does it hurt?

Most people report warmth and mild pressure, and the handpiece cools the skin. Comfort varies by person and area.

How many sessions are typical?

Often one to a few, spaced weeks apart. The doctor decides after assessing the area and the first response.
