IPL Photofacial

Many faces have both small brown spots and a pink cast or tiny visible vessels. Intense pulsed light, unlike a laser, is built for that mixed picture. This page sets out what IPL can address, what it cannot, and when a laser may be the better match.

How it works

An IPL handpiece emits a flash of many wavelengths, filtered to the range wanted for the skin concern. Melanin absorbs part of the light and hemoglobin in small vessels absorbs another part, so brown spots and redness can be treated in the same pass. Absorbed light turns into heat, which breaks up pigment or closes tiny vessels, and cooling protects the skin surface. Because it is broad rather than precise, IPL is generally milder than a pigment-specific laser, and outcomes vary by person.

Who it may suit

  • Scattered sun spots and freckles on lighter skin
  • Mild diffuse redness and small visible vessels
  • A tired, uneven tone from sun exposure
  • Mild redness left after acne breakouts

The treatment day

  1. Check skin tone and tan. The doctor confirms IPL suits your skin color and that you have no recent tan, since IPL is risky on tanned or deeply pigmented skin.
  2. Test and set filters. A small test area helps select filter and energy; gel or cooling is applied.
  3. Flash across the face. The handpiece is moved over the area in overlapping pulses.
  4. Explain what comes next. Darkened spots, mild redness and spacing of sessions are described before you leave.

Aftercare

  • Treated brown spots may darken for about a week and then flake; avoid scrubbing or picking.
  • Apply sunscreen daily and avoid direct sun and tanning.
  • Keep skin moisturized and use only gentle products while it settles.
  • Tell the doctor if blisters, persistent swelling or lasting dark patches appear.

Things to know first

  • Burns, blistering, post-inflammatory darkening and pale patches can occur, and the risk is higher on tanned or darker skin.
  • IPL is generally not advised for melasma, since heat can aggravate it.
  • Pregnancy, photosensitizing drugs and recent isotretinoin use call for a doctor's review.
  • Moles and suspicious lesions should be assessed before treatment and not flashed over.
  • Active acne with deep nodules, infection or open skin in the area is a reason to wait.

How IPL photofacial compares with nearby options

IPL's closest neighbors are pico or Q-switched laser and the vascular laser. A pigment laser aims at melanin only, so it is the sharper tool for stubborn single spots; a vascular laser targets blood vessels and is usually the stronger choice for persistent redness or rosacea. IPL gives a milder, combined effect, which is attractive when both concerns exist and you prefer fewer separate treatments.

Against laser toning, IPL does not tackle melasma-type haze well and may worsen it, so those patches usually point toward toning or topical care. IPL is also not a resurfacing or tightening treatment; it does little for texture, pores or sagging, which are better matched by fractional lasers, microneedle RF or lifting devices.

People with darker skin tones or a fresh tan are generally steered away from IPL toward options with narrower wavelengths. A doctor can tell which route is safer for your skin.

IPL Photofacial: common questions

Is IPL a laser?

No. IPL emits a broad band of light in a flash, while a laser emits one wavelength. They overlap in what they treat, but they are chosen and set up differently.

Can IPL treat melasma?

It is usually not recommended, because the heat may worsen it. Gentler approaches are generally preferred.

Does IPL help with rosacea redness?

It may reduce mild redness for some people, but persistent vessels often respond better to a vascular laser.

How many sessions are common?

Often a short series a few weeks apart, adjusted to your skin. Maintenance visits vary by person.
