Spectra
Spectra is a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, the workhorse comparison point for toning, tattoo removal and carbon laser peels.
How it works
Spectra, from Lutronic, is a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser operating at 1064 nm (and in some modes 532 nm). Q-switching packs energy into nanosecond pulses, which are short enough to disrupt pigment particles in the skin while limiting heat spread. At low energy, the same laser is used for gentle toning of diffuse pigment, and with a carbon lotion applied to the face, it supports a carbon laser peel aimed at pores and surface oil.
Good to know
- The catalog lists it as a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser.
- It is used for laser toning, tattoo removal and carbon laser peel.
- One platform spans very different treatment intensities, from gentle toning to stronger spot work.
- Redness and temporary pigment darkening are possible; results vary by person.
Where Spectra sits among similar devices
Spectra is useful to understand because it covers three different concerns with one wavelength. Toning treats broad tone unevenness at low energy, tattoo removal uses stronger pulses on a defined target, and carbon peel acts on a surface layer with a topical aid. The device is the same, but the intent and settings change completely.
Compared with picosecond lasers, nanosecond pulses are longer and rely a little more on heat. Compared with IPL, the 1064 nm wavelength is less absorbed by surface melanin, which is part of why it is considered for a wider range of skin tones. A doctor weighs these factors against your pigment type.
Spectra: common questions
What does Q-switched mean?
It is a way of making a laser release energy in very short, strong pulses.
Is Spectra a pico laser?
No. Its pulses are in nanoseconds rather than picoseconds.
Can it treat melasma?
Low-energy toning is often discussed for melasma, but recurrence is common and technique matters.
