Visible pores and uneven texture: which category works on the cause behind them?

Pores look enlarged for different reasons, such as high oil output, loss of the firmness that holds pore walls tight, or residual scarring, and each cause leans toward a different category. Fractional lasers, RF microneedling, chemical peels, oil-targeting approaches and skin boosters are commonly discussed, with realistic aims centered on refinement rather than erasing pores.

Why pores look bigger than they used to

Pores are the openings of hair follicles and oil glands, and everyone has them. They tend to appear more noticeable on the nose, inner cheeks and forehead, where oil glands are active. Over time, reduced collagen around the follicle can let the opening stretch and sag into a teardrop shape. Sun damage, past acne and a buildup of dead cells can all add to the impression of coarse, uneven skin.

Identifying which of these factors dominates is the first step. An oily, congested T-zone points to a different conversation than elongated pores on the cheeks of someone with mature, sun-exposed skin.

  • Oil-driven pores: active glands and congestion, often in younger or oily skin
  • Laxity-driven pores: stretched, oval openings linked to collagen loss
  • Scar-associated texture: shallow pitting left by earlier acne
  • Surface roughness: dead-cell buildup and uneven turnover

Categories commonly discussed for pores and texture

Non-ablative and ablative fractional lasers resurface the skin in a grid pattern and are often considered when texture and fine scarring are present. RF microneedling delivers heat around the follicles at controlled depths and is frequently discussed for laxity-driven pores. Chemical peels using agents such as salicylic or glycolic acid work on the surface, helping with congestion and roughness, and are generally milder in recovery.

Some approaches target oil production itself, including certain lasers and small-dose intradermal toxin techniques that some doctors use to reduce oiliness and pore appearance temporarily. Skin boosters, including PN and hyaluronic acid types, are sometimes added to support hydration and overall skin quality. Prescription topicals such as retinoids are often part of the background plan as well.

Device or procedure: why technique matters for texture

A fractional laser can be set for a light refresh with little visible aftermath or for deeper resurfacing that requires real recovery time. Density, depth, energy and the number of passes are chosen by the doctor according to your skin type and tolerance for downtime. With RF microneedling, insulated or non-insulated needles and the depth chosen around the follicle change how much surface reaction occurs. Asking how aggressive the planned setup is, and why, gives a clearer picture than comparing device lists.

Who may need caution

  • Pregnancy, when many energy and peel treatments are postponed
  • Recent isotretinoin use, which can change how resurfacing heals
  • Active acne lesions, rosacea flares, eczema or infection in the area
  • Darker skin types with a tendency toward post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • A history of keloids or thick scarring
  • Recent use of strong exfoliating products or retinoids without the doctor's knowledge

Risks, recovery and realistic aims

Common reactions include redness, swelling, a sandpaper feel and fine grid marks after fractional work. Light peels often cause brief redness and mild peeling, while ablative resurfacing can involve several days of visible flaking or crusting. Possible side effects include post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, infection, acne flare and, uncommonly, scarring or burns. Pores cannot be removed, since they are part of normal skin structure, so improvement is usually described as making them look tighter or less prominent, with maintenance at home playing an ongoing role.

Frequently asked questions

Can pores be closed or removed?

No. Pores are part of how skin functions. Treatments may make them look smaller or less noticeable, but they remain.

Is a peel enough for texture?

Surface roughness and congestion may respond to peels. Deeper textural changes or laxity-driven pores are more often discussed with fractional lasers or RF microneedling.

Why do pores look worse in summer?

Heat and humidity often increase oil output, and congestion can make openings look more prominent. Seasonal change is one reason doctors look at the underlying cause rather than appearance on a single day.
