Mesotherapy (Skin Meso)

Mesotherapy is a technique with many versions, so it helps to know where it sits next to branded boosters. This page explains what it involves, what the evidence can and cannot support, and how it compares with other options for dull or congested skin.

How it works

In skin mesotherapy, a doctor injects small amounts of a mixed solution, commonly vitamins, minerals, amino acids and sometimes hyaluronic acid, into the superficial layers of the skin. The mixture is chosen or prepared by the doctor for the goal, such as hydration or brightening. The idea is that delivering these substances directly into the skin places them where topical products may not reach. Studies of specific mixtures are limited, and the results depend heavily on what is used, so benefits are usually described as modest improvements in glow and texture. Because formulations vary, it is worth asking what is in the syringe.

Who it may suit

  • Dull, tired skin that lacks glow
  • Mildly enlarged or congested-looking pores combined with dryness
  • People who want a customizable, low-downtime booster course
  • Skin that needs a general refresh before an event or after sun exposure

The treatment day

  1. Discussion of goal and ingredients. The doctor asks about your concern, allergies and medications, and explains the intended mixture.
  2. Numbing. Numbing cream is left on for a while before the small injections begin.
  3. Superficial injections. Tiny amounts are injected at many shallow points, by hand or with a multi-needle device.
  4. Soothing. The skin is cleansed and calmed, and sunscreen is applied.

Aftercare

  • Avoid heavy make-up and touching the area for the first day
  • Skip exercise, sauna and swimming pools for a day or two
  • Use sunscreen and a gentle moisturizer
  • Do not squeeze bumps, which normally settle within a day or two

Things to know first

  • Small bumps, redness, bruising and itching are common and usually brief
  • Allergic reactions to ingredients can occur, so share allergies and ask what is used
  • Infection from poor technique is a risk, so a clean setting and sterile single-use needles matter
  • Not suitable in pregnancy, breastfeeding, active infection or with certain medical conditions
  • It is not a treatment for deep lines, scars, volume loss or sagging

How mesotherapy compares with nearby options

Branded boosters such as hyaluronic, polynucleotide and multi-ingredient products have a fixed formula, and the marketing and the evidence trail relate to that formula. Mesotherapy is closer to a custom recipe. That is a strength if the doctor chooses well for your skin, and a weakness if you cannot find out what is being used. A useful question is whether the ingredients are approved for injection into skin.

Compared with a peel, mesotherapy adds substances rather than removing surface cells, so it suits dry or dull skin better than rough, congested skin. For visible pores that come from oil and blocked follicles, acne care, a peel or an oil-focused option is generally more relevant.

It should not be confused with fat-dissolving injections, which share the word in some clinics but use different substances and are intended for body fat. Be clear about which one is being offered.

Mesotherapy (Skin Meso): common questions

What is in the solution?

It varies, and that is the key question. Ask the doctor which ingredients are used and for what purpose.

Is it the same as a skin booster?

It is related. Boosters often use a defined hyaluronic or polynucleotide product, while mesotherapy tends to use a custom mixture.

Will it shrink my pores?

It may improve overall texture a little, but pore size is largely genetic and results vary by person.

How many sessions are needed?

Often a series of several sessions weeks apart. The number depends on your skin and the mixture used.
