Hair Loss Injection (Scalp Mesotherapy)

Hair loss injections, often called scalp mesotherapy, place small amounts of nutrient or growth-supporting solutions into the scalp. They are discussed for diffuse thinning and early pattern hair loss. The honest summary is that they are an adjunct. Evidence is mixed, products vary, and a diagnosis of the cause of hair loss matters more than the injection itself.

How it works

A fine needle or injector delivers tiny amounts of a mixture into the upper layers of the scalp. Mixtures may contain vitamins, amino acids, peptides, growth-factor-like ingredients or other agents, and the exact formula differs between clinics. The idea is to place active ingredients near the follicle and stimulate the surrounding tissue, with the aim of prolonging the growth phase of hairs that are still alive. Dormant or scarred follicles generally cannot be revived.

Who it may suit

  • Early diffuse thinning where follicles are still active
  • People using or considering medical therapy who want a supportive step
  • Hair shedding that has been assessed and has a clear cause
  • Those who accept gradual change over months

The treatment day

  1. Diagnosis first. The doctor examines the scalp and may order tests, since thyroid problems, iron deficiency and hormonal causes change the plan.
  2. Scalp cleansing and numbing. The scalp is cleaned, and numbing cream is used if needed.
  3. Micro-injections. Tiny doses are placed across the thinning zones in a grid-like pattern.
  4. Review schedule. Photos are taken to track density over months.

Aftercare

  • Avoid washing the hair for several hours or as advised
  • Skip strong hair dyes, harsh scalp scrubs and tight styles for a day or two
  • Sun and heat on a sensitive scalp should be limited
  • Continue any prescribed hair medication as directed

Things to know first

  • Redness, tenderness, small bumps and minor bleeding are common
  • Infection or scalp inflammation is uncommon but possible; report increasing pain, warmth or discharge
  • Active scalp infection, scarring hair loss, pregnancy and allergy to ingredients are usual reasons to avoid it
  • Shedding can seem to increase temporarily before any improvement
  • Many people see limited change, and ingredient lists differ between providers

How hair loss injections compare with nearby options

The nearest neighbor is PRP, which uses the patient's own blood-derived platelets instead of a pre-mixed solution. PRP has a larger body of published studies for pattern thinning, while mesotherapy cocktails vary so much that comparison between clinics is difficult. Some doctors combine them.

Compared with prescription medicines such as topical minoxidil or oral treatments, injections usually play a supporting role. Those medicines are the mainstay for pattern loss, and injections do not substitute for them. Hair transplantation is a different category altogether and is used when density loss is established.

On the hair thinning page, the most important question is not which injection but what type of loss it is. Patchy loss, scarring loss, and sudden shedding each need their own evaluation.

Hair Loss Injection (Scalp Mesotherapy): common questions

Can scalp injections regrow hair on a bald area?

Unlikely. They are intended to support follicles that are still producing hair, not to restore follicles that have shut down.

How long before I can judge results?

Hair cycles are slow, so assessment usually needs several months. Early shedding or no visible change in the first weeks is not unusual.

Is it better than PRP?

There is no clear answer. PRP has more published research, while mesotherapy formulations differ widely. A doctor can explain what is being used and why.
