Dermal Filler
Hyaluronic acid filler answers a very different question from a booster or a collagen stimulator. This page explains when a gel placed in one spot is the logical choice and when another option makes more sense.
How it works
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that attracts and holds water. Filler products use a cross-linked form that resists breakdown, producing a soft gel that is injected into or under the skin to add volume, smooth a fold or define a contour. Softer gels suit shallow lines and delicate areas; firmer gels are used where structure is needed. The effect is immediate and is gradually reabsorbed by the body over months, and the duration varies by product, area and person. An enzyme can dissolve hyaluronic acid filler if a problem arises, which is one reason it is widely used.
Who it may suit
- Hollowed or flattened areas such as the temples or mid-cheek
- Nasolabial or marionette folds linked to volume loss
- Defining the chin, jawline or nose contour in selected cases
- People who want an adjustable result they can review soon after treatment
The treatment day
- Facial assessment. The doctor looks at proportions, where volume has been lost, and your goals in terms of look rather than product.
- Numbing and marking. Numbing cream is applied and injection sites may be marked.
- Placement. Gel is placed with a fine needle or cannula, depth and amount chosen for each area.
- Molding and review. The doctor may gently shape the gel and check symmetry before finishing.
Aftercare
- Avoid pressing or massaging the treated areas unless instructed
- Skip intense exercise, saunas and alcohol for a day or two to limit swelling and bruising
- Sleep with your head slightly raised for the first night if the doctor suggests it
- Report severe pain, whitening or dusky skin, or vision changes immediately
Things to know first
- Swelling, bruising, lumps and tenderness are common and usually settle in days to two weeks
- Rarely, filler enters or compresses a blood vessel (vascular occlusion), which can cause skin damage or, near the eyes and nose, vision loss; this is an emergency
- Overfilling can create an unnatural or puffy look, and filler can migrate or form nodules
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding, an active infection nearby, or an allergy to ingredients like lidocaine all argue against it
- Blood thinners and some supplements increase bruising, so list everything you take
How dermal filler compares with nearby options
The central distinction is between adding something and prompting the body to build something. Hyaluronic acid filler adds immediate volume with a predictable, adjustable shape. Collagen stimulators such as poly-L-lactic acid or calcium hydroxylapatite give a more gradual change and work over a broader area. If you want a precise correction to a single fold or contour, filler is usually the more direct choice; if the whole mid-face has lost support, a stimulator may be discussed instead or in addition.
Skin boosters use related ingredients but are placed superficially and spread through the skin to improve hydration, not to add shape. A booster will not fill a deep fold, and a filler will not leave skin looking more luminous in the way a booster might.
Filler does not tighten loose skin. If the problem is laxity rather than volume, energy devices or lifting approaches are more appropriate, and adding filler to very loose skin can make it look heavy.
Dermal Filler: common questions
Can filler be reversed?
Hyaluronic acid filler can usually be dissolved with an enzyme, which is one reason it is chosen for sensitive areas. Dissolving it is a medical decision and should be done by a doctor.
How is it different from a collagen stimulator?
Filler adds volume right away and fades over months. A stimulator prompts your own collagen production over weeks, which gives a gradual and often broader change.
Will it make my skin look better?
Not in itself. It adds shape, not skin quality. For hydration and texture, boosters are the usual comparison.
How long will it last?
It varies by product, area and person, commonly from several months to over a year.
