Pico Laser
A picosecond laser is not a single treatment so much as a tool that fits several concerns on the map: freckles and sun spots, stubborn pigment, mild acne scars and tattoo ink. This page explains how it differs from toning, IPL and fractional options, and when another route may fit better.
How it works
A pico laser fires pulses lasting trillionths of a second. At that speed, energy acts more through a photoacoustic effect than through heat, shattering pigment particles into tiny fragments that the body clears. Fractional or diffractive lens attachments split the beam into many micro-points, which can trigger skin renewal and are used for texture and mild scars. Because less heat builds up, the treatment can sometimes be gentler on surrounding skin, though results and comfort vary by person.
Who it may suit
- Sun spots, freckles and other defined brown spots
- Stubborn marks that did not respond to lower-energy sessions
- Mild acne scar texture, when used with a fractional attachment
- Skin with lingering post-inflammatory pigment that is still flat
The treatment day
- Match the mode to the target. The doctor chooses between a spot-treatment setting, a gentle full-face toning setting or a fractional texture setting.
- Prepare and protect. The skin is cleaned and eyes are covered; numbing cream may be used for spot or texture work.
- Deliver the pulses. Short pulses are applied to targeted spots or across the area in a pattern.
- Plan the interval. Aftercare is explained and the next visit is spaced to let the skin settle.
Aftercare
- Treated spots may darken and form tiny dry scabs that flake off over days; do not pick them.
- Apply the moisturizer or ointment the doctor recommends.
- Use daily sunscreen and avoid tanning during the course.
- Report blisters, spreading redness, discharge or pigment that darkens and persists.
Things to know first
- Post-inflammatory darkening and temporary redness or swelling are the common side effects; pale spots and blisters are less common.
- Darker or recently tanned skin carries a higher risk of discoloration and needs conservative settings.
- Pregnancy, active infection, cold sores in the zone and photosensitizing medicines usually call for postponing.
- Melasma can worsen with excess heat, so settings and expectations should be set cautiously.
- Deep or wide acne scars rarely improve enough with pico alone.
How pico laser compares with nearby options
Compared with laser toning, pico is more versatile. Toning is the low-energy, whole-face course for haze, while pico can also strike a single freckle or ink fragment more strongly. If your pigment is diffuse, toning or pico set gently may both be discussed; if it is a crisp spot, a pico or Q-switched setting is typically the closer match.
Against IPL, pico is selective for pigment, whereas IPL's broad light also picks up redness and is milder for scattered spots. For scars, pico with a fractional attachment is gentler than CO2 or erbium resurfacing but also less powerful, so it is better suited to shallow texture than to deep pits. Microneedle RF and subcision are the usual comparisons for deeper scars.
Pico is not a tightening or volume treatment, and it does not remove moles or growths. For those concerns other categories fit better, and a doctor should check any dark lesion before it is lasered.
Pico Laser: common questions
Is pico laser the same as laser toning?
They overlap. Toning is a low-energy full-face protocol, and a pico laser can be used for it, but pico can also treat single spots and texture at different settings.
Will it remove all my freckles?
It may lighten many, but freckles can return with sun exposure, and results vary by person. Sun protection matters.
Does pico fix acne scars?
With a fractional attachment it may soften shallow texture. Deeper scars usually need other categories.
How long do the spots look dark?
Treated spots often darken and flake over about a week. The doctor can tell you what is normal for the setting used.
