Thread Lift
If you want to see some lift soon after the visit, and not wait for collagen to remodel, a thread lift is the option that behaves differently from HIFU, radiofrequency or laser tightening. It also asks more of you: a procedure with anesthetic, and a few days of swelling or bruising.
How it works
Fine absorbable threads, commonly made of polydioxanone (PDO) or similar materials, are placed under the skin with a needle or cannula. Some threads are smooth and mainly stimulate collagen; others have small cogs or barbs that grip tissue and support it in a slightly higher position. Over months the threads dissolve, and the collagen response they provoke may continue to support the area. The lift is modest and varies by person, thread type and the quality of the surrounding skin.
Who it may suit
- Mild to moderate sagging of the midface, jawline or brow
- People who want a visible effect without surgery
- Faces with decent skin quality that have started to descend
- Those who accept a few days of swelling for a more immediate change
The treatment day
- Plan the vectors. The doctor marks the direction and depth of each thread based on how your face moves and where it sags.
- Numb the area. Local anesthetic is given at the entry points and sometimes along the path.
- Place the threads. Threads are inserted through tiny openings and positioned to support the tissue.
- Check symmetry. The doctor reviews the result, adjusts if needed and gives specific movement and sleep instructions.
Aftercare
- For the first few nights, lie on your back with your head propped up a little.
- Avoid wide yawning, strong facial massage and hard chewing for the period the doctor recommends.
- Use cold compresses for swelling and keep the entry points clean.
- Contact the doctor about fever, spreading redness, a visible thread, dimpling or severe pain.
Things to know first
- Bruising, swelling, tenderness and temporary tightness are common; dimpling or asymmetry can appear.
- Less common problems include infection, thread migration or visibility, nerve irritation and scarring at entry points.
- Very thin or very lax skin, heavy jowls, active infection, pregnancy and bleeding disorders or blood thinners may make threads unsuitable.
- The lift typically softens over months as the threads dissolve, and it does not match what surgery can do.
How a thread lift compares with nearby options
The main contrast is speed versus subtlety. HIFU, radiofrequency and laser lifting rely on collagen renewal, so change builds slowly and stays modest. Threads offer a mechanical lift that may be noticeable earlier, but with a real procedure, anesthetic and more downtime. If you cannot spare several days of possible bruising, an energy device may be a better fit.
Threads also differ from filler. Filler replaces lost volume and can make a face look less sagging by filling hollows, while threads move existing tissue. Many faces need a bit of both. When volume loss is the main problem, adding thread lifting to a face without enough tissue may look pulled rather than refreshed.
If there is a lot of excess skin, a surgical facelift is the more realistic comparison, and threads are unlikely to change it enough. A doctor can look at the degree of descent and tell you which category fits.
Thread Lift: common questions
Will I see a lift straight away?
Some lift is often visible soon after, but swelling can mask or distort it for several days. The final look settles over weeks and varies by person.
How long do thread lifts last?
The threads dissolve over months, and the effect gradually softens. Duration depends on thread type, tissue quality and aging, so no fixed length can be promised.
Is a thread lift better than HIFU?
They suit different expectations. Threads give a mechanical lift with more downtime, while HIFU tightens gradually with little downtime. Your degree of sagging and tolerance for recovery decide.
Can threads be removed?
They dissolve on their own, but a problem thread can sometimes be removed by a doctor. This is another reason to choose an experienced provider.
